The director of Borat Subsequent MoveFilm, Jason Woliner, revealed that the movie’s main target was the Former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani.
Woliner’s directorial debut Borat 2 (stylized as ВОЯДТ) is a mockumentary comedy movie. It stars Sacha Baron Cohen and Maria Bakalova. Cohen played the character of a fictional Kazakhstani journalist and a TV personality Borat Sagdiyev. And Bakalova played the character of his 16-years-old daughter Tutar.
The film starts with Borat’s return to America to send a gift as a gesture of apology as the original Borat movie has hampered its reputation. He realizes that his daughter Tutar snuck into the monkey’s crate and has eaten him. Borat then decides to gift his daughter instead.
During that journey, Tutar receives a makeover, and Borat introduces her at a debutante ball, where Tutar displayed her menstrual blood during a father-daughter dance.
Eventually, that plan fails, so Tutar and Borat decide to give her to Rudy Giuliani. The next sequence is one of the most infamous sequences among many. In the scene, Tutar pretends to be a journalist and invites Giuliani into her hotel room. The shot shows Giuliani lying on the bed and putting his hand down his pants. The footage received substantial public attention even before the film’s release, and the personal attorney was met with a considerable amount of criticism. However, in defense, Giuliani said he was tucking his shirt.
During a recent interview with Insider, director Woliner shared that Giuliani was always the film’s primary target to expose. He said that even the first draft of the Borat 2’s script had Giuliani as the final set-piece. The director also mentioned that the former Mayor also gave more public appearances, which was lucky for the film.
He said Giuliani’s name was always there in the script. Rudy was the name in the first version of the screenplay. For the year and a half, they were making the movie, and he was not at the level of popularity as he is now.
However, Giuliani claims that the scene was a fabrication and was edited to defame him. While the film’s editing leaves room for doubt, it is hard to see what happened there. Still, Giuliani’s behavior with the journalist in the scene has faced a tremendous amount of criticism. On the other hand, Cohen claimed that the scene contains what happened on the spot and encouraged them to watch the movie and make their own opinion.
