The DC Extended Universe developed a lot after the release of the film Man of Steel in the year 2013. The DCEU has elevated various comic characters into their respective identities. There are different comic characters in the DC Extended Universe, which have performed much better in the movies than their comic counterparts. The DCEU also included some new comic characters in their shared universe, which were adapted for movies. These characters have played a better role on the big screen than their roles in DC Comics in several ways.
Here are the five comic characters who are better off in the movies.
Professor Emil Hamilton
The character of Professor Emil Hamilton is portrayed by Richard Schiff in the film Man of Steel. He helps the government in locating the Kryptonian spaceship and later meets Superman in this film. Professor Emil Hamilton played a crucial role in the film Man of Steel by sacrificing his own life to stop Zod’s forces. However, in the comics, Hamilton is an ally of Superman initially, but later, he became a mad villain Ruin rather than sacrificing his life like a hero in the movie.
Atlanna
Atlanna is a character played by Nicole Kidman in the film Aquaman, released in 2018. Jason Momoa played the character of Arthur Curry/Aquaman in this film. According to the story of the film, Atlanna is the mother of Arthur and is considered the Queen of Atlantis. Arthur’s father, Thomas Curry, is from land, and therefore, Arthur is a half-Atlantean, half-human, who is unwilling to be king of Atlantis. In this film, Atlanna spends several years surviving the sea creatures, but finally, she reunites with Arthur’s father and her former lover. However, the comic version does not show that many happy endings as compared to the movie.
Captain Boomerang
The actor Jai Courtney portrays the character of Captain Boomerang in the film Suicide Squad, which was released in the year 2016. This film introduced a lot of villains into the DC Extended Universe, including Captain Boomerang, played by Jai Courtney. Although this film was not a great success, most of the fans praised the character of Captain Boomerang, who is considered as a laughing stock in the comics, but a courageous character in the movie. Also, Courtney is set to play the character of Captain Boomerang once again in the upcoming reboot, The Suicide Squad, by James Gunn.
Doctor Sivana
Mark Strong played Doctor Thaddeus Sivana in the film Shazam!, which was released in the year 2019. In this film, Sivana is shown as a short and mad scientist, along with a lot more improvements over the original character in the comics. He also connects with the magical mythology of the Shazam in this movie. Mark Strong is again set to portray Doctor Sivana in the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods and the fans are very excited to see his more improved performance.
Cassandra Cain
Cassandra Cain’s character made her theatrical debut in the film Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn). She played the role of a pickpocket in this film. She comes into contact with Harley Quinn because she stole from the wrong person. She is considered the first Batgirl. However, her DCEU’s version is very different from the comics. In the comics, Cassandra is shown more tragic as compared to the big screen.
After discussing the five comic characters, who have played better roles in the movies than in the comics, we have concluded that all the DC Extended Universe characters are very talented and have played a better role on the big screen than in comics. This is an excellent initiative from the DCEU and its characters. We hope to see much more improvements in the characters’ arc over the comics in the upcoming movies.
