Google Chrome Goes Black? Here Is How to Fix It

Google Chrome is easy, quick, and offers more than 11,000 extensions to enhance functionality. But like any other technology, it has its fair share of issues. One of which is the black screen faced by Chrome users. If you also did come across one, here are some workarounds to get rid of the issue.

Turn the Chrome Extensions Off

Since third parties create the Chrome extensions, Google doesn’t control them. As a result, they aren’t able to run perfectly with the updated versions. You can check these extensions are your culprit for the black screen by disabling all of them. In case the black screen goes off, then it was the extension that was causing it. But which one? To check this, enable the extensions one by one till you find the faulty one. Make sure you delete this extension or disable it. Follow the steps below to disable the extension:

  1. Click the triple-dot icon at the top of the screen.

  2. Take your move over the option titled, “More tools.”

  3. This will bring up the options from which you need to select Extensions.

  4. Turn off the toggle switches next to all the extensions.

  5. Now, shut down the Chrome window and relaunch it.

If it didn’t help solve the problem, then move on to the next solution.

Disable the Chrome Flags

The advanced features in Chrome, like the flags, can sometimes provoke a black screen. You may consider disabling the flags to check if the issue still exists. Below are the instructions to help you disable Chrome flags:

  1. Start by launching Chrome.

  2. Go to the address bar and type chrome://flags/. This will break up the screen showing all your Chrome flags.

  3. Switch of the toggle switches next to the flags that might be causing the issue.

  4. Now, close the Chrome window and then relaunch it.

Turn off the Hardware Acceleration

Try to turn off the GPU Compositing for all the pages on Chrome; this might help you get rid of the black screen. Here is how:

  1. Create a shortcut to Chrome on your desktop or click on one if you have it already.

  2. To create a shortcut, right-click on your desktop screen to select the Properties option.

  3. Then click on the Shortcuts tab.

  4. Type “[space]-disable-gpu” in the window that appears.

  5. Save the changes by clicking the button for the same.

  6. Now, open Chrome through its shortcut and navigate to Settings.

  7. Open “Show advanced settings.”

  8. Turn off the option titled “Use hardware acceleration when available.”

  9. Finally, start Chrome again.

Change the Size of the Browser Window

You might have accidentally increased the browser window’s size to such a value that your PC cannot support it. Hence, the black screen. So, to resize the window, click on the title bar twice. This will shrink the window.

Take the Chrome Back to its Default State

Resetting Chrome will take it back to its original settings and also remove the extensions. Here is how:

  1. Click the triple-dot icon located at the top-right of the screen.

  2. Select Settings followed by Advanced.

  3. Scroll down to reach the “Reset and Clean up” section.

  4. Here, select “Restore settings to their original defaults.”

  5. Now, click the Reset button to confirm.

Try Compatibility Mode for Chrome

Compatibility mode will allow you to run Chrome on different versions of Windows. This feature might help you get rid of the black screen. Here is how to activate this mode:

  1. Right-click on the shortcut of Chrome to bring up options.

  2. From the list that appears, choose Properties.

  3. Then select the Compatibility tab.

  4. Click on the arrow alongside the option named “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select whatever version of Windows you want to run on.

  5. Finally, hit Apply, followed by OK.

Reinstall Chrome

In case none of the methods mentioned helped you get rid of the black screen, you are only left with uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the taskbar and enter the Control Panel to open it.

  2. Click on the option named Uninstall program.

  3. Scroll down the list of apps and right-click on Google Chrome.

  4. Choose to uninstall.

  5. Now, go to the official Chrome website to download and reinstall the program.

We hope that one of the methods mentioned above helped you get rid of the black screen on Chrome. Also, know that these solutions can work for other browser-related issues like crashing.
