Impact of Social Media on Today’s Life

Humans are social animals, and we feel better when we are socially connected. Social media has taken an enormous place in our lives; almost 50 percent of the human race uses social media worldwide. People use Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and many other social platforms to share their day to day activities, chat with people, and do many more things for various reasons. Some share their photos just to show what they do every day, some just want to show off, some want to get more likes and comments, etc. But people never realize that real-life is more important than life on social platforms.

The biggest problem caused by social media is that people are becoming less interactive in real life. They often use mobile phones just to check tweets, likes count, comments, etc. Even when people meet with their friends or family members, they keep checking their phones. Social media is making us very anxious, and it does affect our economy, elections, our health, and many other things.

Well, there are also huge benefits of social media, but if only when we use it in constructive ways, otherwise it is going to be the most hazardous threat to the human race and our society. I aim to make people aware of the problems arising due to the social media platforms so that they can use them in constructive ways and avoid their bad outcomes.

Causes for Anxiety and Depression

Most people feel very happy when they get more likes and comments on their social media posts, and when any post doesn’t work, they start feeling low. It is one of the biggest issues, and it can be fixed only by avoiding the excess uses of social media platforms.

The other big issue is the spread of fake news. Research shows that fake news spreads six times faster and gets 70 percent more engagement than true news. Well, all the social platforms are designed to seek the attention of the users so that they can get huge engagement on the platform and make profits. But whatever happens on social platforms, it directly affects the real world, and it is high time we did something to resolve these issues.

Ideas for Improvement

Some people suggest that we should entirely stop using social media platforms. Well, it is not a good way to overcome the problems arising due to social platforms. So what should we do? The answer is not that simple because we can not break any social platform, it is because if we break one social platform, the other will take its place. The best way to overcome the issues is to stop some data from sharing it will help to prevent the spread of fake news.

But the most significant step can be taken by us, every single individual has the responsibility to make the society better, and if we all decide to do something together, then nobody is going to stop us.

We can control ourselves and stop using social media platforms, excessively. The sufficient time to use social media is 15 to 30 minutes a day, but most of the people use them over 5 to 6 hours a day. Well, it is still not too late to fix this issue. So, let’s start it from today. I can understand that nobody can change their habits in a day, but we can start by reducing our engagement time on social platforms.

Suppose a person uses social platforms for 5 hours every day, he can reduce his activity on the social platforms to 4 hours 45 minutes. The reduction of 15 minutes may not look like a big change, but it can play a significant role in changing the habit and making the person less active on social platforms. Gradually we can reduce the time until we reach the activity time of 15 minutes per day. I hope it will change your perspective. Thank you for reading the article.
