Mac: Organize and Remove the Preference Panes

Mac’s System Preferences is the personalized space where you can add and store all those things you need to customize and control regularly. While this is a critical window to organize all your daily work, what if this System Preferences window is loaded with unnecessary preference panes? Well, if your preference window has anything that you seldom use, you can always remove it. You might not be able to delete every unwanted preference from the System window, but hiding them is still an option. So, read this article to learn how to organize or remove unnecessary Preferences Panes in macOS.

How to Hide Preference Pane in macOS

While you can not delete the macOS’s built-in preference panes permanently, there is a way to hide them. Here is how:

Step 1. First of all, open the “System Preferences” app.

Step 2. Go to the toolbar and click on “View,” followed by “Customize.”

Step 3. A list will appear displaying all the items available in the System Preferences window. Each item will have a checkbox next to it. So, you can deselect the one which you want to hide from the preference pane.

Step 4. Once you have made the desired changes, click on “Done” located at the top left corner to save the changes.

Now, you will find the System Preferences window without the deselected items.

Restore  Hidden Preferences to the System Window

Since a preference pane can not be deleted and only hide it from the System Preferences menu, you can view it anytime. As it is still in your system. If you feel that you need a preference pane back on the System window at any point in time, you can quickly restore it. Here is how:

Step 1. Open System Preferences and click “View,” followed by “Customize.” A page will open up with all the System Preferences panes.

Step 2. Select the checkbox of the setting that you wish to restore.

Step 3. Click “Done” at the top left corner to save the changes.

Now, when you open the System Preferences menu, the selected Preference pane will appear.

Method to Delete Third-Party Preference Panes

Third-party applications are useful, but they come with a malicious habit of doing certain things without asking your permission. One of which is adding their panes to the System Preferences window on their own. So, if you want to remove a pane added by a third-party application, you can simply go to your System Preferences application, control-click the unwanted pane, and hit “Remove.”

In case this method doesn’t help solve the problem, consider deleting the file linked with this preference pane. Here is how:

Step 1. Go to the “Finder” window.

Step 2. Open the Mac toolbar and click “Go,” followed by “Go to folder.”

Step 3. Enter the following on the screen that appears: “/Library/PreferencePanes.”

Step4. Finally, hit “Go.” The next screen will display all the “Preference Panes” folders created by your third-party applications.

Step 5: Scroll down to find the file that matches the unwanted preference to click and drag it to the Bin.

We hope you could execute these methods to hide and delete the undesired Preference Panes from the System Preferences window.
