My Hero Academia: Mysteries Behind One for All Quirk

A long time ago, One for All gave the Quirk that can collect power to his brother. However, he was unaware of the fact that his brother already can transfer powers. Generations later, these two Quirks together made the mysterious One for All that can collect Quirks and pass them down to its future users. The two brothers were nothing like each other, while All for One used his abilities to gain greater control over the world and increase his influence, his brother, on the other hand, wanted a peaceful world. At some point in his life, he gave his Quirk to someone he felt was worthy of fighting for the goal of defeating One for All. The anime starts with the eighth holder of All for One, All Might who passes it down to Izuku, the ninth holder. But in its long history, One for All has had several secrets and mysteries that still baffle the heroes in the modern world, today we look at some of them and try to make out how fascinating the mysterious Quirk can be.

Used to be a Weak Quirk

Watching All Might and Izuku use One for All, one can be mistaken to believe that it has always been an extremely powerful Quirk, but nothing can be further from the truth. The Peculiar Quirk was relatively weak when it was with the brother of One for All, however because of its ability to stockpile other powers with time it got strong enough even to challenge All for One. What is intriguing about its history is the fact that previous users had some sort of Quirk before they inherited it; however, the two exceptions to this have been All Might and Izuku. It is unknown how the previous users were able to use such a weak Quirk to establish order in the world.

All Might

Before One for All was passed on to Izuku by All Might, he had to undergo rigorous training to prepare him for the powerful Quirk he was going to inherit. Even with all the training and preparation when he started using even small percentages of it, he would break his bones. The Quirk seemed incompatible with his body, and it was hard to think that he will ever be able to use all the potential it had. However, it is tough to understand how All Might was able to use One for All when he inherited it without any training. While he too was Quirkless just like Izuku, how was he able to use such a powerful Quirk without any training? 

Although there are no official answers to the question, the fans do speculate over it a lot. One of the most convincing theories so far has been that when All Might receive the mysterious Quirk, it was not as strong as when Izuku got it. Which means that All Might had been able to work hard on it to build up to an extensive amount before it was passed on to Izuku. Therefore, when Izuku got it, he inherited a much stronger Quirk which demanded physical endurance to handle it.  

Past Inheritors of One for All

The elusive Quirk has the ability to nurture the consciousness of the past users, which allows them to live in the subconscious realm. It has the ability to stockpile powers; however, there is little information on the psychic features it exhibits sometimes. All Might once said that he saw the ghosts of past users and Izuku went a step ahead of his predecessor as he was able to enter the subconscious and talk to past inheritors. Although he has little control over this ability, he spoke to the brother of All for One and the fifth user of his Quirk. 

In fact, in the War Arc, the first user of One for All even warned him of the imminent threat. This raises an even further question since a past user advised Izuku about a future event that had not yet happened. How could the past user know that something terrible was about to happen even before it did? It will be interesting to see how manga and anime are going to resolve these intriguing questions raised by the fans. 

Multiple Quirks

Izuku is not only able to talk to the past users, but he can also use the Quirks that they had along with One for All. This is unprecedented since even All Might was not able to do it. Izuku, therefore, seems to be the chosen one who will complete the mysterious Quirk. However, there are still many things the fans don’t understand. Why Izuku and not All Might who did a great job and always instilled the confidence of ordinary people in heroes? Why only he has the ability to gain the Quirks of his predecessors and not any of the previous users? 

It is yet not known why the ninth user, Izuku, is chosen to complete the One for All Quirk and what is its implication for future users. But if he can defeat All for One Quirk for good, then his powers might not even be necessary. We will have to wait to see how the creators plan to resolve the present questions that One for All and its mysterious origins have raised.
