OnePlus has announced that their new smartphone will build on the concept that changes colors as a user breathes and sports a motion-tracking radar tool. OnePlus is calling this concept a part of reactive sensing technology.
About Reactive Sensing
The concept of “reactive sensing” first surfaced when the radar and sonar signal transmissions came into play. The main objective of reactive sensing is to measure and evaluate the object’s behavior. When any primary source regarding the object becomes unavailable, it results in seeking solutions and resorts to the smart and intelligent use of available secondary sources. Hence, reactive sensors work on assessing the changes and triggering with a response by an instrument. These sensors find their wide applications due to the simple construction, small integrational volume, low-cost, and robustness. Apart from these, they provide a non-contact measurement.
Latest Development
As per OnePlus, their new OnePlus 8T will use a technology called Electronic Color, Material, and Finish (ECMF). This technology sounds like Google Pixel 4’s radar-enabled motion sense technology. There is a fourth camera sensor that swaps out to create space for a mmWave radar module. This module transmits and receives electromagnetic waves. Also, it will use a motion tracker for answering a phone call with the help of gestures. Apart from this, the OnePlus 8T is going to offer highly-rich functions like sensing a user’s breathing. OnePlus took inspiration in designing the back of the smartphone from Pamukkale, Turkey’s multi-hued flowing water in the hot springs.
How is OnePlus using ECMF?
OnePlus uses ECMF through a color-changing film, residing under the glass panel of the smartphone. This film contains a metal oxide. There are different voltage levels that change the valence state of the metal ions present in the film. Hence, on activation of the metal oxide, there is a change in the glass’s color, precisely from dark blue to a light silver. As a result, the back of the smartphone shows that there is a breathing effect. It is just like the notification LED on receiving an incoming call. The DSP and CPU present in the smartphone has the capability to process the transmission and reception of data. Thus, this process allows the device to track and locate objects without needing the camera.
Measuring Movements
The radar module in the OnePlus smartphone can measure and evaluate the breathing of a user. It monitors the movement of the user’s chest on millimeter-level. Apart from this, the electrochromic back can tune with this radar module that keeps it in synchronization. According to OnePlus, the mmWave radar module technology gives faster response than the ToF sensor. The mmWave radar system consumes less power and has no environmental effects. Hence, it can even work in low-lighting conditions. This smartphone has the capability to integrate many healthy tracking movements in the body, which are present mostly in wearable devices and gadgets.
Conclusion
The OnePlus 8T will hold most of the features as its predecessors. But, showcasing such capacity where the user can track breathing movements and answer a call with gestures will act as the finest shining star of this smartphone. Such technological integration can also challenge the existence of health-monitoring wearable devices. However, it is too early to predict or forecast the release of this smartphone.
