Oppo Watch: Interesting and Futuristic Google-Powered Wearable

Oppo is known for its semi-premium smartphones that try to copy the likes of Samsung and Apple. The Apple Watch has always been superior to any Android watch present in the market. However, Oppo now seems to challenge this idea by bringing their new Oppo Watch. The new Oppo watch brought the best of both worlds together, with its top of the line hardware and improved software experience.

The watch is available in two variants, a 41mm one and a 46mm one. The 46mm Oppo watch is the more premium one of the two, and that’s the one we used for this review. Now, let’s face it; this looks exactly like the Apple Watch. Be the dial or the strap or some of the watch faces, it’s clear that the Apple watch very much inspires this, but there’s more to it. It is safe to say that this is undoubtedly the best Wear OS smartwatch out there. It is worth noting that this is a smartwatch and not a fitness tracker. It has eSIM support, so it is network connected. You can use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or even connect it to a network; it can be used entirely without a phone if you wish. The Oppo Watch comes with a charger which is of type-A inside the box. You will need a USB-A charging adaptor that goes into the wall.

Look and Feel

It comes with a 1.91 inch super AMOLED display which curves to the sides. You get the main button on the side and a secondary button at the bottom which can be customized to do anything you like. The best part is the watch takes less than an hour to charge fully, making it super handy on the go. The strap fits really well and is comfortable to wear; you just have to pop it in for putting it on.

The display is probably the biggest highlight of the smartwatch. The curved edges provide it with a premium look, very close to what we are used to from the Apple watch. Of course, it comes with a bunch of watch faces that look just beautiful in the curved 1.1 inch AMOLED display. The app gives you more watch faces to download and customize the smartwatch as per your liking. The straps are luckily also customizable, you can interchange them, and there are a number of colour options available at the moment. Oppo is working to bring more colour options in the future.

Features and Performance

The processor of the smartwatch has two power modes, one that powers all the smartwatch functionality along with a lower power version that you can use by turning all the smart features off from the notification menu, resulting in saving tons of battery. There is a do not disturb mode, and a vibration motor too. There are different settings for the screen brightness and for the volume controls. It has a dedicated Aqua mode which can turn off any accidental touches if you want to take this to swim. NFC is here as well and is supposed to work seamlessly with payment systems in different countries.

There is an app here for breathing – if you want to do that and also a heart rate monitor for tracking your pulse. You can find a wallet app that you can set up with whatever the wallet provider is in your country. There’s also an emphasis on voice input for making the watch even smarter. Thanks to the smart assistant and some other voice recognition, you can basically talk to the watch without having to input too much text yourself. This is always a good thing considering the screen here isn’t that big as compared to a smartphone display. You can set this smartwatch up with both Android and iOS by downloading Oppo’s HeyTap health app. You could actually link it up to your calendar so it would show you your calendar from your iOS device. After a recent update, it can also link messages from your iPhone.

Overall the smartwatch is pretty decent in the way it matches up to an iOS device, but of course, if you have an iPhone, you’re probably only going to go for the Apple Watch instead. Oppo has made some considerable improvements in the Wear OS, and this is paired up well with premium hardware and a beautiful built. The Oppo Watch is priced at $300 and $480 for the 41mm and 46mm variants respectively. Of course, these are not cheap smartwatches but are reasonably competitive in the segment.
