PUBG Mobile has been one of the most popular smartphone games in recent years, both for Android and iOS platforms. But until now it did not support high-speed refresh rates. High-speed refresh rates have suddenly become the standard in the last two-three years for smartphones. Even though they improve the user experience immensely, very few games support gaming beyond 60 frames per second. But recent developments are going to change everything.
PUBG last year had hinted at supporting gameplay at higher refresh rates but there were no official announcements regarding it. Even if one had a smartphone with 90 or 120 Hz refresh rates, that still won’t have helped as the game didn’t support gameplay beyond 60fps.
But the old days of using tricks just to play the game at higher refresh rates are over now. It was recently made official that Tencent games are going to soon provide support for 90fps gameplay in the US and many other countries. But if one wants to play the game at 90fps right now one needs to have the following OnePlus phones – OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus7T or OnePlus 7. Adjust your display settings at more than 60Hz. Then if you have the latest update you can change the frame rate setting to 90fps (which are just under graphic settings) and just like that you are good to go. You can enjoy PUBG mobile at 90fps now.
OnePlus made a similar deal with Epic games in May which will make it possible for their 8 series users to play Fortnite beyond 60fps. But playing the game 90fps will re-adjust the graphic settings to low. It is still not known whether playing PUBG mobile at higher frame rates will affect the graphics or not, nothing has been made official by Tencent regarding it. But the processing power of the phones might play a big role.
The update for all the phones will come only in September. PUBG mobile at 90 fps will be available for phones with higher refresh rates that support gameplay beyond 60fps next month. This means that iPhone users won’t be able to play the game at 90fps since their screens are stuck at 60Hz. One would need an iPad which has higher refresh rates to support 90fps gameplay.
The race for gaming at higher refresh rates has already begun and it seems likely that soon all games will update accordingly to support smoother gameplay. It will be interesting to see which games will be able to get the upper hand in wooing its users with better gaming experience at the earliest.
