Due to this pandemic, the world has almost stopped, and the movie theaters are mostly closed. The upcoming movies are making the video-on-demand their new streaming platform. Some countries are reopening the theatres, but audiences avoid coming out of their safe homes to the public theatres.
A month back, Christopher Nolan released his big-budget science fiction movie, Tenet. The film did not collect enough box office revenue to break even the production cost. However, many filmmakers and producers postponed the release for 2021.
We have tried to make a list of such movies that are rescheduled for next year’s release.
Dune
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is a science fiction epic movie. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by author Frank Herbert. Filmmaker Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts co-wrote the screenplay of the film.
Dune was initially scheduled for an early theatrical release but has now been postponed for 1 October 2021 in the United States. Some great A-listed actors are part of the cast including, Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, David Dastmalchian, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Barden.
The plot of the movie is set in the future humanity named Duke. They live on Dune, which is a deserted planet. The planet is known for a source of the valuable substance “the spice” that can increase human life expectancy, move faster than the light and think like superhumans. When Leto Atreids gets a chance to supervise the planet Dune, he accepts the opportunity knowing that it could be a trap. And the storyline then gradually grows from there.
Villeneuve is a Canadian director, and he has given some fantastic movies to the industry. He has also received four Canadian Screen Awards for Best Direction for Maelstrom, Incendies, Enemy, and Polytechnique. Villeneuve was nominated for the Academy Award for the science fiction movie Arrival as Best Director.
Despite the filmmaker’s incredible past work, the studios are not willing to take any financial risks.
Godzilla Vs. King
The movie is a sequel to the 2014 Godzilla: King of Monsters and 2017 Kong: Skull Island. It is the 36th installment of the franchise. Adam Wingard directs the film, and Max Borenstein and Eric Pearson write the screenplay. Alexander Skarsgard will be playing the character of a geologist who works with Kong, along with other casts including Rebecca Hall, Shun Oguri, Kyle Chandler, and Millie Bobby Brown in their respective characters.
The storyline of the Godzilla Vs. King is set in a time when monsters are living on the Earth. While Kong and Godzilla are the two powerful forces, their collision is a spectacular battle for the ages. The movie attempts to create a ”MonsterVerse” to prepare a base for its crossover base.
The shooting of the film started in November 2018 in Australia, Hong Kong, and Hawaii. Godzilla Vs. Kong was scheduled for the November 2020 release, but to the pandemic, it rescheduled to 21 May 2021.
The last release of the franchise Kong: Skull Island did an impressive box office business of $566.7 million against a budget of $185 million. Hence it is certain the filmmakers and producers do not want to risk the profit.
F9
F9, also known as Fast and Furious 9, is the ninth installment of the franchise. The movie is an action drama directed by Justin Lin. With the old cast, Vin Diesel, John Cena, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Hele Mirren, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Charlize Theron will also be in the film.
Universal Pictures initially planned F9 to be a 2020 release, but audiences are avoiding coming out due to the pandemic, and hence it is rescheduled for 28 May 2021. Producers want to bring the ninth and last film of the franchise to the big screen when the situation will be better to ensure the box office profit.
The plot is in the continuation of the last movie. It starts with the protagonist Dominic Toretto (played by Vin Diesel) and his family face the assassin, Jacob, who works with the old enemy Cipher. Each sequel of the movie introduced some character’s past life relations. In this movie, the plot will explore the secret brother of Dominic Toretto, and John Cena will play the character.
A Quiet Place Part II
John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place Part II is the second installment of the science fiction horror franchise. The movie stars Millicent Simmonds, Emily Blunt, and Noah Jupe.
The film’s plot follows the Abbott family, who fight for survival for a deadly unknown creature in silence. The creature hunts its prey with the ability of high hearing power. The sequel will continue the storyline, where it ends in the first film where the family finds a device to keep the monsters away.
Along with the old cast, Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy also joined the franchise in the sequel. A Quiet Place Part II had a premiere on 8 March 2020 in New York City, and it was initially scheduled to be released in March 2020. However, due to the pandemic, Paramount Pictures postponed the release date to 23 April 2021.
The first film was a big hit and made a $340.9 million box office collection against a budget of $21 million. Fans are excited for the sequel to release. And the postponed release date is a good decision for the success of the film.
Black Widow
The movie is the first Black Widow’s standalone movie, and fans are waiting for the film for years. The movie Black Widow is a prequel project that focuses on the early life of Black Widow when she was working for the mission, which brings the SHIELD closer to her family.
The talented, BAFTA and Golden Globe Award winner Scarlett Ingrid Johansson is playing the character of Black Widow. Her recent movie Marriage Story was nominated for six Academy Awards. Along with Johansson, the audience will also see Florence Pugh and David Harbour in the movie. The film was supposed to be a Christmas release, but now the studio has postponed it for May 2021.
These are the few films among many whose release dates are being postponed for next year’s release.
